Emily MacCallum

Musicology

Biography

Emily MacCallum is a PhD student in Musicology with a collaborative specialisation in Environmental Studies. Emily’s doctoral research questions how extraction and industrialism influenced music production and reception throughout Britain and, more broadly, how extractive industries influenced the cultural understanding of landscape. She examines the relationships between early 20th century British orchestral and brass band music and the cultural and material conceptions of landscapes particularly in the context of resource extraction across the UK. Emily has previously been awarded a Bachelor of Music (2017) from the University of Victoria and an MA in Musicology (2020) from the University of Toronto.
