Biography

Joshua Tolulope David is a doctoral candidate in Musicology in the Faculty of Music. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Master of Arts in Ethnomusicology from the University of Lagos, Nigeria. His doctoral research examines the staging of canonical European operas in Lagos, Nigeria, by Nigerian performers and designers, from 2009 to the present. He specifically investigates how these operas have taken on new meaning in the Nigerian context and what new identities have been created through these encounters. Since the beginning of his doctoral study, Joshua has presented his research at several professional conferences. He also serves as an Affiliate of the Black Opera Research Network. His work has been graciously funded by the Neville Austin Musicology Scholarship and the R. Sterling Graduate Fellowship.
