Biography

Matthew Shih is a PhD candidate in Musicology at the University of Toronto, where he is also completing a Collaborative Specialization in Jewish Studies. His research focuses on transnational migration and cultural exchange between Europe and China in the twenty and twenty-first centuries. His dissertation examines how musical interactions between Jewish refugees and Chinese natives in Shanghai during the WWII era cultivated new understandings of national belonging, musical modernism, and gender identity. Matthew is a Vanier Scholar, and his work has also been supported by the Fulbright Program, the American Musicological Society, the Association for Asian Studies, the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation, and the American Academy for Jewish Research.
