What is a Direct-Entry PhD?

It is possible to enter the Direct-Entry PhD in Ethnomusicology following completion of undergraduate studies. This is a five-year program that adds a full year of coursework to the start of the PhD in Ethnomusicology.

The Doctor of Philosophy - Direct Entry in Ethnomusicology is a research-intensive degree. Students conduct an original enquiry into the nature, meaning, and significance of music from a global socio-cultural perspective. They complete preliminary coursework, sit comprehensive examinations testing their general knowledge of the field, and prepare a major work of scholarship to be defended during a final oral examination.

Core Courses

Core courses prepare students for their comprehensive examinations and dissertation research. Students conduct independent research in ethnomusicology under the supervision of a faculty advisor. They also participate in a PhD seminar that culminates in writing a publication-quality paper.

Electives

Elective courses promote breadth. They include choices inside and outside of musicology, ethnomusicology, and theory as well as outside of the Faculty of Music.

Other Requirements

Students must complete language requirements, comprehensive and field examinations, and a thesis of original research in ethnomusicology.
